New England Hot Air Balloon Elopement

hot air balloon elopement guide

Are you considering getting married or proposing to your partner in a unique way? Do you want wedding photos that don’t look like a carbon copy of everyone else’s? Let’s take a ride on a hot air balloon across the mountains of New England overlooking the sunrise or sunset. Even if you are afraid of heights since the hot air balloon is moving with the wind and that flying at all is so weather-dependent you will feel like you are floating gently with the clouds. This guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about planning a hot air balloon elopement in New England, including essential tips, safety measures, and FAQs.

Tips for Riding in a Hot Air Balloon:

  1. Weather Conditions: Weather plays a crucial role in hot air ballooning. For this reason when I work with the pilot we usually set more than one date. That is why hot air balloons are best suited for elopements because it is a lot easier to reschedule 2-10 people’s schedules than 100! Mike’s top priority is safety and he will only fly when the winds are calm and the skies are clear. Wind speeds should ideally be below 10 mph for a safe and enjoyable ride.

  2. Dress Appropriately: Even during warmer months, it can get chilly at higher altitudes. Dress in layers to stay comfortable throughout the flight. Opt for shoes you feel you cam move in as you'll be climbing in and out of the basket during takeoff and landing. If there is a nearby pond or lake we have actually touched down and glided across the lake like some sort of flying kayak. That being said, if you want to include this as an option and weather permits, make sure to wear shoes that you are okay with getting a bit wet!

  3. Pay Attention to Your Pilot: Your pilot is your guide throughout the experience. Follow their instructions carefully, especially during takeoff and landing. They will provide safety briefings and ensure a smooth journey. Mike also has a really fun story of the history of hot air ballons, but you will have to fly with us to hear it! Be attentive and cooperative throughout the flight.

Safety Measures:

  1. Pre-flight Inspection: Before takeoff, the pilot will conduct a thorough inspection of the balloon and equipment. This includes checking the envelope (the fabric part of the balloon), burners, and basket. It's essential to trust your pilot and their expertise in ensuring a safe flight.

  2. Emergency Procedures: While hot air ballooning is generally safe, it's crucial to be aware of emergency procedures. Pilots are trained to handle various situations, including unexpected changes in weather or landing in a different location than planned. Pay attention to safety briefings and ask questions if you have any concerns.

  3. Weight Restrictions: Balloons have weight restrictions for safety reasons. Ensure you provide accurate information about the total weight of passengers and any additional equipment. This helps the pilot determine the appropriate amount of fuel needed for the flight.

FAQs for Hot Air Balloon Elopement:

  1. Is it Safe to Get Married in a Hot Air Balloon?

    • Hot air ballooning is generally safe when conducted by experienced pilots and in favorable weather conditions. Pilots prioritize safety and will only fly when conditions permit.

  2. Can We Customize Our Balloon Ride for Our Elopement?

    • Yes, many hot air balloon companies offer customizable elopement packages. You can work with the pilot to plan the route, timing, and any additional decorations or amenities you'd like for your special day.

  3. What Happens in Case of Bad Weather?

    • Safety is the top priority for hot air balloon operators. If weather conditions are not suitable for flying, your pilot will reschedule the flight for another day or time. It's essential to be flexible and understanding, as weather can be unpredictable.

By following these tips, prioritizing safety, and addressing common FAQs, you can ensure a smooth and memorable experience for your special day. So, why not elevate your wedding day with a breathtaking adventure in the skies?

New England offers a stunning back drop for a hot air balloon elopement. Most important is to be flexible on rescheduling and to go in with expectations that needing to reschedule is always possible. The pilot and I usually combat this by preserving a whole weekend and scheduling other activities that are more easily movable for a full adventure weekend. The benefit of multi-day elopement coverage means that pending weather we can always schedule another activity if needed and move things around as needed such as a hike, a romantic dinner, kayaking, swimming, wine or beer tasting, etc. Usually within a week the pilot will have a good idea of the likelihood of a flight and within a few days he can make the final call!
